Hate Them
I don’t know about you but I absolutely abhor receiving or making cold calls. It makes my blood boil when I inadvertently get tricked into answering a call from somebody trying to sell me something I don’t want or need.
Useful Tip
I’ve learnt to stay silent until they speak, once I hear the give away click I put the phone down. In some cases, if you don’t speak, their call to you can’t go through anyway and they get cut off….*Evil Cackle!
Can’t Understand the Callers
I used to have empathy for the poor sods making the calls, having made a few cold calls myself. But now, given that 9/10 of the few calls that do get through, I can’t understand what they are saying and the content is irrelevant to me, they just fuck me off. And if they’re doing that to me, is it such a good idea for me try to generate new business by doing that to someone else?
Not a Good Business Strategy
There is an expectation, I am not entirely sure whose…perhaps largely self-imposed, that I need to inflict cold calls upon the World in order to generate new business?!
Negative Association
There is an element of truth in this, if I get a list of local massage therapists and call them systematically, one by one, I will eventually make a hit….However, for every one person I’ve engaged, I’ve probably hacked off at least ten in the process!
That’s not very good odds….And do I want my brand associated with the other irritating hustlers out there?
High Energetic Price
Cold calling requires me to be at my most engaging, sophistikat, charming self…which involves a hell of a lot of energy to manifest. When the starting point is a make-free, sleep deprived, menopausal old hag nursing a cold cup of tea surrounded by half eaten packets of biscuits….it’s a ravine type of jump…
Lonely Wolf
I’m sure it’s different if you are in a team set up, with a leader motivating you and setting targets. At home, alone with the cat, doesn’t quite cut it….I could set myself targets…..? I can’t even manage my calorie intake these days, so I don’t have a lot of faith in my achieving those! I’m not sure I can face more failure….
Tried & Tested
TBH, I have made a few calls and they though my audience have been nicer than some, this type of consultative sale doesn’t work well over the phone…I am finding. In order to remain in a state of oily bliss, I acknowledge I hate imposing myself upon others….and making the calls is too stressful; I am having enough hot sweats as it is…
Social Media is Better
Cold calling has had its day in this household! I am sure if I can ever get a handle on all this social media wizardry, I can get around this horror. Or just revert to old-fashioned word of mouth and networking….
Besides its sooooo passe darlink, it’s SO 90s!
